How many years have you been in tech?
Tell me about your background. What were your early years like?
I have an extensive academic back ground in computer science. I started my career at a multi national technology company in India which provided my first steps into software development in the real world.
How were you exposed to tech?
My exposure to technology started with my undergraduate degree. I was not sure what computer science as an area of study was going in but by the end I knew I liked programming a great deal.
What is your current role?
What is your proudest accomplishment?
When my work in image processing was published in a scientific journal.
“She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.” Tell us about a time that this applied to you.
One of my first employers let me go summarily after coming to know I was pregnant with some flimsy excuse even after getting positive reviews on my internal assessments. This was quite a shock to me as this was the first time I faced blatant sexism at a work place or otherwise. It took a lot of self belief to get back into a workplace and continue my career. But I am happy I did not shy away and persist because I feel accomplished being a software developer now.
What are you learning right now?
My main focus is keeping up to date with the latest in iOS development. I am really interested in learning more about programming for wearables and other products in the iOS ecosystem.
What was the last fear that you faced? How did you feel after you conquered it?
It was very recently that I had to face my fear of public speaking. I volunteered to present my team’s update to the client for a weekly update. I am glad I did that but I feel I need a lot more practice to feel more confident about speaking in public.
What advice do you wish someone had given to you? What advice would you give to others starting out?
Being a woman from a rural part of India, I wish someone encouraged me to take more chances at childhood and college level to participate more actively in extracurricular activities to build up confidence that one needs entering a professional life.
What are your hobbies?
What do you like about St. Louis? The midwest? Why do you live here?
After working in big cities like New York and Chennia, I appreciate the quiet life I have with my family over here.
