How many years have you been in tech?
Tell me about your background. What were your early years like?
My background is web design. Since I majored in graphic design, my focus has always been on user interface design. The majority of my career has been at agencies who supported marketing and advertising efforts for well-known brands.
How were you exposed to tech?
Good question. My college classmate and best friend, Kathryn, was instrumental in piquing my interest in web design. It was ’97, so the internet was still relatively new. She created her own web site on the university’s server, and I thought she was so cool and so smart. But she taught me some basics, and I ended up creating one too and also geared my entire senior thesis & portfolio towards web design. I landed my first interactive design internship at Fleishman-Hillard in ’99, which ended up being my first full-time job once I graduated in 2000.
What is your current role?
UI / UX Designer at WWT Asynchrony Labs
What is your proudest accomplishment?
My family: My wonderfully loving and supportive husband, Billy, my two amazing, adorable and smart boys, Will (5.5) and Ryan (1.5), and our loyal and loving rescue dog, Jaxson.
What are you learning right now?
I am learning to communicate effectively with my team as it applies to software design. Who knew that it’s not only the technical skills you bring to the table, but all the intangible soft skills that can make all the difference in the world?
What was the last fear that you faced? How did you feel after you conquered it?
Last fear: my last doctor’s appointment. There’s no getting around it, but was happy when it was over & I could focus on work stuff.
What advice do you wish someone had given to you? What advice would you give to others starting out?
Best advice: Don’t skip typing class as an elective. I did in order to take another art class in high school. That is probably my biggest regret.
What are your hobbies?
My family, working out, teaching my fitness class, art & design when I have the time.
What do you like about St. Louis? The midwest? Why do you live here?
My family is from here, and it’s central to, well, the entire country. I appreciate all the fun free things there are to do, and that commuting is not insane (as compared to bigger cites). I like the four seasons, and STL offers that as well.
Who inspires you?
Name dropping makes me feel uncomfortable, but I have old friends, teachers, and current colleagues that have pulled me aside to teach me things and help me live up to my potential. My husband’s support continues to inspire me.
