How many years have you been in tech?

9 years

Tell me about your background. What were your early years like?

I pursued my bachelor’s in computer science which was my introduction to tech. At first it was really difficult. I also pursued a master’s in computer science and it still didn’t come naturally to me at this point. I really started enjoying it once I started working. It made a lot more sense 🙂

What is your current role?

Business Systems Analyst

What is your proudest accomplishment?

I have worked on multiple projects at work where I have been a critical part of the team and helped drive success. I have also had various opportunities to be a leader/ mentor and leverage my skills to help others. I feel a great sense of accomplishment when I am able to help someone. I volunteered at the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America in 2011. The experience was very rewarding. I was a big sister to a 6 year old girl. She was very quiet at first when we started meeting but over the course of the year, she opened up to me and I feel like I was able to make a difference by just giving her the attention that she deserved and spending time with her.

“She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.” Tell us about a time that this applied to you.

I feel fortunate to not have experienced much prejudice especially being in the minority as a woman in tech. There have been a couple of times though where I have felt like others were not confident in something I was doing. I have learned from these situations to focus on the positive and to give it your best regardless. It always turns out good in the end!

What are you learning right now?

I am working on my public speaking and networking skills at the moment. I recently gave a presentation on Oracle SQL to a PASS (Professional Association for SQL Server) women in technology group. I feel really motivated by new challenges so I am constantly seeking work that will push me to learn something new and get me out of my comfort zone.

Describe a time where you solved a problem in a creative way. For example, did something in your personal life trigger a solution to a problem at work?

Sometimes I find myself thinking about problems from work when I am home or grocery shopping or working out and solutions have come to me at random times that I have implemented at work. I went to a workshop this weekend and the talk was focused on asset based thinking vs deficit based thinking. While the speaker was going over how it makes a difference when you see a situation as glass half full or glass half empty, I was able to think of a specific situation at work that I could apply what she presented and hopefully be able to move forward with a problem.

What was the last fear that you faced? How did you feel after you conquered it?

When I was pursuing my degree in computer science, I was not very confident if I would be successful in tech. I remember coming out of the first unix class in my master’s program and crying because I thought I couldn’t do it. I worked hard and did pretty well at the end in the class. I thought I didn’t have the aptitude for being in tech but I don’t feel this way at all anymore. I now feel that I can accomplish whatever I set my mind to – nothing is impossible.

What advice do you wish someone had given to you? What advice would you give to others starting out?

My advice to anyone starting out in tech would be to be patient and persistent, it takes time but it’s not impossible!

What are your hobbies?

I like to read, travel and spend time with family and friends.

What do you like about St. Louis? The midwest? Why do you live here?

I have been living in St. Louis for a little over ten years. The people here are very welcoming and I have built friendships here that I know will last a lifetime!

Who inspires you?

I am inspired by a lot of people around me. My biggest inspiration is my older brother. He is the best example in my life of someone who has built everything from scratch and is always successful at what he does. I am also inspired by my mom – she’s a strong woman. Last but not the least, my husband who inspires me every day to find happiness in small things!

Anything else you’d like to add?

I am so excited to be a part of tech right now. It’s shaping our future – from wearable tech to self driving cars to robots to AI and drones!! I developed a passion for tech after I started working but I have been interested in fashion since I was a teenager. I am hoping to work on something in the future that is a union of the two!
